Name the mechanism first
Do not choose a card because its image matches the mood. State the mechanism in plain language—investigate, restrict, repair, negotiate, test, complete—and then identify the Servitor whose canonical function fits.
If the mechanism cannot be named, return to the question and facts before selecting.
Compare the nearest neighbors
For every candidate, name at least one nearby alternative and explain the difference. The Cartographer investigates unknown territory; the Lantern reveals an obscured detail; the Scale evaluates competing values. Similar atmosphere does not mean identical work.
The comparison is part of the answer, not an optional footnote.
Use exclusion criteria
Ask what the candidate must not be used for. Limits often distinguish two cards more clearly than broad keywords. A Servitor designed for repair is not automatically the right one for reconciliation, and a boundary function is not a license for punishment.
When two mechanisms are both active, use a sequence rather than collapsing them into one card.
Selection note
Document problem, mechanism, chosen Servitor, rejected neighbor and reason. This short note creates a training record and makes later review possible.
